Costner’s iconic character from that beloved baseball movie Antworten

For Blue Jays’ 29 year old catcher Raffy Lopez , satisfaction comes with being a good teammate Michael Saunders Jersey, the simple act of working with that day’s pitcher to make him better and hoping important people are watching that can give him his next big league opportunity. Thus, Lopez was asked whether Kevin Costner’s minor league classic, Bull Durham was his favourite movie. No, it’s Days of Thunder.

That being said, Lopez has much in common with Costner’s iconic character from that beloved baseball movie, the veteran minor league catcher Crash Davis.

In seven professional seasons, the Florida native, Lopez has been with four organizations. Add in one season of Independent ball, he has been suiting up for teams in 14 different cities with just an accumulated 80 days of major league service.

“I came in the Jays spring and I was the seventh catcher, no big league invite,” Lopez recalled prior to the series finale with the Yankees. “They told me, ‘We’ve seen you play before. We like you. We’re going to give you an opportunity to make a Double A or Triple A team.’ I realized it would be a tough decision for them to make room for me, so I just went about it like I had already made a team, in terms of my preparation and just having fun during spring training.”

Lopez on Wednesday impressed manager John Gibbons in his first start behind the plate despite being held hitless in two at bats in a loss to the Yankees. He drew a walk and reached on catcher’s interference and defended well.

“I thought he did a nice job,” Gibbons said. “He blocked his butt off. He’s got a nice quick release. He’s got a good arm. I thought he took some good swings. He turns it loose. He just missed that one in the upper tank foul . I liked everything I saw. We had good reports on him from guys down there. They really liked what he was doing in Buffalo. He’s got some energy. He’s got some pep.”

Lopez has an interesting background, attending Florida St. University as a shortstop, but being converted to catcher, ending up replacing Giants’ all star and MVP Buster Posey as the Seminoles starter behind the plate.

“It was tough, big shoes to fill, a lot of shadows,” Lopez said of replacing Posey. “When he left, it was cool to watch someone like him and the way he flew through the minor leagues and got to the big leagues. I guess it’s a good trivia question. Who was the catcher after Buster at Florida State? But I wouldn’t change my time there for the world. I’m sure Devon would respond the same way.”
