Giants-Patriots “Kudos & Wet Willies” review Alright Antworten

, New York Giants fans. Let’s hand out our final “Kudos & Wet Willies” of the preseason following Thursday’s 17-12 loss by the Giants to the New England Patriots.Kudos to ...Donte Deayon — Two interceptions, four passes defensed, three tackles. Yeah, he earned himself a roster spot.Chris Lewis-Harris — Same with Lewis-Harris. If he wasn’t secure in making the roster before Thursday, he should be now. No splash plays, but he was solid all night. His coverage was good, his open-field tackling was solid. That’s what you want from a reserve cornerback.Jhurell Pressley — Signed by the Giants mostly just to help get them through the final two preseason games when injuries hit the running back position, Pressley has seized the opportunity. He had 7 carries for 40 yards (5.7 yards per carry) Thursday and caught all 3 passes thrown to him. Could he emerge with a surprising spot on the practice squad?Robert Thomas — Had a sack, a quarterback hit and 3 tackles. Thomas polished off a nice season that should see him make the 53-man roster by having a nice game.James Bettcher — Just because it was fun to see the defensive coordinator go all sorts of ballistic after New England quarterback Danny Etling ran 86 yards for a touchdown on a bootleg.Amba Etta-Tawo — After an excellent spring and solid beginning to training camp, the young wide receiver had been quiet in the preseason. Thursday, he took a short pass from Kyle Lauletta 41 yards for a touchdown. Perhaps that secured him a spot on the practice squad.Wet Willies to ...Marshall Koehn — Missed another extra point Thursday. That was his second miss of the preseason. He won’t make the team, and kicking like that won’t find much interest from the other 31 teams.Preseason replay challenges — Pat Shurmur and Bill Belichick each challenged calls during the game. Booooooooooooooooo!!! C’mon, guys. The idea was to get the game over with , not stretch it out.Helmet rule — The Giants were penalized three times, at least two on calls that looked completely ridiculous. A flummoxed Shurmur said after the game “Some of the plays now, we’re getting flags that if those aren’t part of the game, I don’t know if we have a game.”Kwillies to ...Kyle Lauletta — Thursday was a great opportunity for Lauletta to get some much-needed extended playing time. Unfortunately, he didn’t do a lot with it. While Shurmur believed his night was better than his 8-of-19, 1 touchdown, 2 interception stat line indicated there were some missed opportunities. Corey Coleman has gone from the 15th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns to being traded and then cut by two teams since August of this year, and now landing on the practice squad for the New York Giants. So, why did the Giants take a flier on the 24-year-old Coleman?“We brought him here because we feel like he’s got a future. He’s very talented, he’s fast, he’s a good receiver,” coach Pat Shurmur said. “He’s been a couple places already. We’re kicking the tires on him with the idea that he’s got a future.”Coleman is now on his fourth organization in his third season, and his third since being traded by the Browns to the Buffalo Bills. He was quickly cut by both the Buffalo Bills , who traded a seventh-round pick for him, and the New England Patriots. Here is a little of the explanation for why Coleman, who has 56 receptions in 19 games, has bounced around so much in recent months.Mary Kay Cabot, Browns beat writer for the Cleveland Plain Dealer:“The Browns didn’t like his work ethic or his attitude, and he also got in some trouble here that didn’t sit well. He never got charged, but was with his brother and his friend when they beat up a guy here in Cleveland and left him unconscious on a speed bump in Coleman’s apartment building garage. He also dropped a pass on the 2017 finale vs Pittsburgh that would’ve prevented 0-16.”Coleman was cut by Buffalo less than a month after the Bills traded for him this summer. Bills’ GM Brandon Beane to The Athletic on why Coleman didn’t last in Buffalo:Shurmur said the Giants are, obviously, aware of the issues Coleman has had.“First of all we believe he’s a really fine player,” Shurmur said. “Based on what we’ve heard he’s moved on from those situations. Certainly guys have an opportunity to grow and we’re hopeful that he’s got a future here.”When you are 1-5 with an offense struggling to get the ball down the field it’s hard to argue with taking a flier on a former first-round pick with 4.3 speed, especially when all it involves is using an easy-to-move-on-from practice squad spot.
